An interview with Super Aguri’s Peter McCool

Peter McCool is the Chief Designer employed at the Super Aguri Formula One team and is one of the people responsible for the increased performance in the Japanese based squad’s 2007 contender. In the opening three rounds, their drivers have been right up in the thick of things during free practice sessions and even showing marked improvement in qualifying and racer trim.

Now, as we head into the first round of the European season, Peter speaks on the team’s progress and what they are hoping for in Barcelona this coming weekend.

Peter, as we head to Europe, how do you rate SUPER AGURI F1 TEAM’s performance in the first three races?

I am pleased that we have been able to continue our rate of performance increase from last year to this. This season we are most definitely not last. That vindicates our determined approach to improve performance. Getting in to Q3 of the Qualifying Session in Melbourne was an unexpected reward for all our hard work.

What developments did you run at this week’s Barcelona test?

In true SAF1 Team style we bit off more than we should have done. We have introduced a new carbon gearbox and a comprehensive aero package that includes a revised floor, a new chicken, chimney, T-wing and a whole new rear wing package. It was a shame that the bad weather precluded us from fully optimising this package for the forthcoming race. But I am confident that the hard work of the Aero and Design departments will be repaid with a good race result.
